John Wayne Birthplace Museum

Scott Eyman featured as keynote speaker for museum opening

Over Memorial Day weekend, May 22-24, 2015, John Wayne fans from all over the world traveled to Winterset, Iowa, for the grand opening of the John Wayne Birthplace Museum.

The festivities included a donor’s reception Friday night, followed by the John Wayne Rodeo. On Saturday, the Iowa Military Veteran’s Band (about 100 strong!) played for an hour leading up to the official opening ceremony, which took place in the courtyard of the new museum. All was under the watchful eye of John Wayne, represented by a beautiful sculpture donated by the Wayne family.

Along with Scott Eyman as keynote speaker, special guests were Aissa Wayne (John Wayne’s daughter), Christopher Mitchum, Barry Corbin, author John Farkis (“The Making of John Wayne’s ‘The Alamo’ “), Governor of Iowa Terry Branstad, and many more dignitaries. Master of ceremonies was Joe Zuckschwerdt, museum president. And the man behind all the hard work at the museum, executive director Brian Downes.

Australian fan Ross Schnioffsky shot a well-edited video of Scott’s speech, and you can view that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dVRBz26lLA. Thank you, Ross, for a job well done – and thank you for traveling so far to attend. It was an honor to meet you!

  1. Hello Scott
Thank you for your very kind words regarding the video.
You are reaching a wider audience – my wife, who is not a Wayne fan, teared up while watching the video. I was not overly surprised as it is a such a fine speech.
    Warmest regards,
    Ross
